Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra strongly opposed the claim that Bangladeshis are illegally entering India. In a recent virtual interview with a national English media outlet on July 29, she said that Bangladesh is now ahead of India in many important areas like economy, health, education, and infrastructure.
She stated clearly that there is no reason for Bangladeshis to come to India anymore.
“বাংলাদেশ থেকে ভারতে কেউ আসে না, কারণ অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক অনেক সূচকে ভারতকে ছাড়িয়ে এখন অনেক ভালো অবস্থানে আছে বাংলাদেশ। জিডিপি, স্বাস্থ্য, শিক্ষা, অবকাঠামো- সব দিক থেকেই বাংলাদেশ ভারতের তুলনায় এগিয়ে। বাংলাদেশিদের ভারতে আসার কোনো কারণই নেই।”
“No one comes from Bangladesh to India because Bangladesh is doing better than India in many economic and social indicators. In terms of GDP, health, education, infrastructure – Bangladesh is ahead of India. There is no reason for Bangladeshis to come to India.”

Mahua Gets Angry Over Question on Illegal Migration
During the interview, when the anchor brought up the issue of Bangladeshi infiltration, Mahua Moitra became visibly irritated. She is the MP of Krishnanagar, a region close to the Bangladesh border.
“কোথায় সেই ব্যাপক অনুপ্রবেশ? কারা ভারতে আসছে? কেনইবা কেউ ভারতে আসবে? আমি নিজে সীমান্তবর্তী এলাকার সংসদ সদস্য। আপনি বলুন তো, এখনকার বাংলাদেশি কেন ভারতে থাকতে চাইবে?”
“Where is this so-called massive infiltration? Who is coming to India? Why would anyone come here? I am an MP from a border area myself. You tell me—why would today’s Bangladeshis want to live in India?”
Comparison Between Krishnanagar and Kushtia
Mahua explained that her constituency, Krishnanagar in Nadia district, shares a border with Kushtia in Bangladesh. And based on many development indicators, Bangladesh is currently performing better.
“আমার এলাকা নদিয়া জেলার কৃষ্ণনগর, যার অপরপ্রান্তেই কুষ্টিয়া জেলা। সেখানকার জিডিপি, স্বাস্থ্য ও মানব উন্নয়ন সূচকসহ অনেক দিকেই বাংলাদেশ এখন ভারতের চেয়ে ভালো করছে।”
“My constituency is Krishnanagar in Nadia district, which borders Kushtia. In terms of GDP, health, and human development, Bangladesh is doing better than India.”
She also added a direct message to the ruling BJP leaders:
“দয়া করে মোদিজি ও অমিত শাহজিকে বোঝান, পৃথিবীর সবাই ভারতে আসতে মরিয়া- এমন ভাবনা থেকে যেন বেরিয়ে আসেন তারা।”
“Please tell Modi ji and Amit Shah ji to stop thinking that everyone in the world is desperate to come to India.”
Indians Are Leaving India, Not the Other Way Around
She pointed out a surprising fact: more than 11 lakh Indians have left the country in the last three years. These are people who used to pay taxes and contribute to India but are now moving abroad.
“People are no longer seeing India as a dream destination. Instead, they are spending up to $1 million to get ‘golden visas’ for countries like Dubai, Portugal, and Europe.”
“I’m Talking About Indians, Not Bangladeshis”
When the interviewer tried to argue that poor Bangladeshis cannot afford legal immigration like Indians, Mahua Moitra responded sharply.
“আমি বাংলাদেশিদের নয়, ভারতীয়দের কথা বলেছি যারা বিদেশে যাচ্ছেন। কিন্তু আপনি দয়া করে মাথা থেকে এই ভ্রান্ত ধারণা ঝেড়ে ফেলুন যে, বাংলাদেশিরা ভারতে থাকতে মরিয়া হয়ে পড়েছে।”
“I’m not talking about Bangladeshis; I’m talking about Indians who are moving abroad. But please stop believing the false idea that Bangladeshis are desperate to live in India.”
Sharp Criticism of the CAA and BJP’s Logic
Mahua also raised questions about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). She said that even after the CAA was implemented, very few Bangladeshi Hindus applied for citizenship.
“আপনারা তো সিএএ এনেছেন। তাহলে কেন আজও বাংলাদেশি হিন্দুরা অবৈধভাবে সীমান্ত অতিক্রম করছেন? যদি সত্যিই কারও শরণ নিতে হয়, তারা কেন বৈধ পথে স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ে আবেদন করছেন না?”
“You have introduced CAA. Then why are Bangladeshi Hindus still crossing the border illegally? If someone really needs asylum, why aren’t they applying legally to the Ministry of Home Affairs?”
She added that only a few thousand people applied under CAA, proving that the whole law is based on fear, not facts.
“বাস্তবে সিএএ চালু হওয়ার পরও মাত্র দুই হাজার মানুষও আবেদন করেনি নাগরিকত্বের জন্য। এটা কী দেখায় না যে, পুরো আইডিয়াটাই মিথ্যা আশঙ্কার ভিত্তিতে দাঁড় করানো?”
“Even after CAA came into effect, less than two thousand people applied for citizenship. Doesn’t this show that the entire idea was built on a false fear?”
“If Anyone Crosses the Border, It’s Your Failure”
Mahua strongly criticized the Indian government’s border security measures. She questioned how people are still crossing borders illegally despite huge spending by the Home Ministry.
“দুই লাখ কোটি রুপি বরাদ্দ করেছেন আপনারা স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের বাজেটে। সেই টাকা কোথায় গেল? সীমান্তে নিরাপত্তা জোরদার না করে শুধু বাংলাদেশিদের দোষ দিলে হবে না।”
“You allocated ₹2 lakh crore to the Home Ministry. Where did that money go? You can’t just blame Bangladeshis without strengthening border security.”
“আরও বিএসএফ মোতায়েন করুন, প্রযুক্তি বাড়ান, আলো বসান। তাহলে দেখবেন কেউ ঢুকতেই পারবে না। একজনও যদি ঢুকে, সেটার দায় আপনার।”
“Deploy more BSF, increase technology, install lights. Then no one will be able to cross. If even one person does, the responsibility is yours.”
Political Reactions Expected
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently alleged that Bengali-speaking people are being harassed in BJP-ruled states. In reply, the BJP claimed that these actions are taken to prevent illegal immigration.
Now, with Mahua Moitra’s strong and clear statements, a fresh political debate has been triggered across India.
