Bangladesh Jail Renamed as ‘Correction Service Bangladesh’

Bangladesh Jail

The government has taken the initiative to rename Bangladesh Jail as Correction Service Bangladesh to focus more on the correctional aspect of prisons. The announcement was made after finalizing the draft of the Correction Service Act 2025. Officials also revealed plans to recruit new staff, build a central prison hospital, and improve the overall prison system.

Name Change for a Correctional Approach

The name Bangladesh Jail will now be changed to Correction Service Bangladesh. This decision aims to emphasize the role of prisons not just as detention centres, but as places of correction and rehabilitation.

Brigadier General Syed Md. Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons, announced this decision during a press conference after the draft of the Correction Service Act 2025 was finalized.

New Recruitment to Solve Manpower Crisis

The prison authority is facing a serious manpower shortage. To address this, the government has already approved new recruitments, and an additional demand for 1,500 more staff has also been sent.

Central Prison Hospital in Narayanganj

A new initiative has been taken to construct a central prison hospital in Narayanganj to provide better healthcare facilities for inmates. This is expected to improve medical services inside the correctional facilities.

Prisoners Sometimes Call the Inspector General

The Inspector General also shared an unusual fact—that sometimes prisoners themselves make phone calls to him directly from the prison.

He said:

“Sometimes prisoners also call the Inspector General directly from the prison.”

This change, along with new facilities and staffing, is part of the government’s effort to make the prison system more effective in rehabilitation and correction.
