‘Bangladesh Made No Deal That Sacrifices National Interest’: Says Press Secretary

The Press Secretary of the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, has clarified that no agreement made with the United States compromises Bangladesh’s national interest. He also confirmed that there has been no military deal. This comes amid discussions on reducing tariffs on Bangladeshi products exported to the U.S. He called the development a “success for the government.”

No Deal That Hurts National Interest

Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, has strongly stated that no deal has been signed with the United States that sacrifices Bangladesh’s interest. He also confirmed that no military agreement has been made.

“বাংলাদেশের স্বার্থ বিসর্জন দিয়ে কোনো চুক্তি করা হয়নি, কোনো সামরিক চুক্তিও হয়নি। সরকারের জন্য একটি সফলতা।”
Translation: “No deal was signed by compromising Bangladesh’s interest, and there was no military agreement. This is a success for the government.”

No Hidden Conditions from the U.S.

Regarding the 20% counter tariff imposed by the United States, the Press Secretary clarified that no other hidden conditions were attached. He assured that the government would try to make the process easier for all parties.

“২০ শতাংশ শুল্কের সঙ্গে অন্য কোনো শর্ত দেয়নি যুক্তরাষ্ট্র। যতটুকু সম্ভব বিষয়গুলোকে সহজীকরণ করা হবে।”

Translation: “The United States did not impose any additional conditions with the 20% tariff. We will simplify matters as much as possible.”

Trade Agreements Are Confidential

Press Secretary mention that the agreements made with the U.S. are under non-disclosure, so all details cannot be shared publicly at the moment. However, he insisted again that the country’s interest was not compromised in any way.

“যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে যেসব চুক্তি হয়েছে, সেগুলো আসলে নন-ডিসক্লোজার (অপ্রকাশ্য)। অনেক কিছু জানলেও এখন বলা সম্ভব নয়।”
Translation: “The agreements made with the U.S. are non-disclosure. Even though I know many things, I cannot say them right now.”

Bangladesh Is Not Falling Behind in Trade

According to him, Bangladesh is not falling behind in trade, as its tariffs are now close to those of competitor countries. He also said that this development is reducing trade risks.

“প্রতিযোগিতামূলক রাষ্ট্রগুলোর সঙ্গে কাছাকাছি শুল্ক থাকায় বাণিজ্যের ক্ষেত্রে পিছিয়ে থাকছি না। পাশাপাশি বাণিজ্য ঝুঁকিও কমে যাচ্ছে।”
Translation: “We are not falling behind in trade since our tariffs are now close to those of competing countries. At the same time, trade risks are also decreasing.”

Efforts to Reduce Trade Deficit with the U.S.

Lastly, the Press Secretary mentioned that the government has taken steps to reduce the trade deficit with the United States, and these efforts will continue further.

“যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে বাণিজ্য ঘাটতিও কমিয়ে আনার বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হয়েছে। তা আরও কমিয়ে আনা হবে।”

Translation: “Various steps have been taken to reduce the trade deficit with the U.S. It will be reduced even more.”
