Bangladesh Moves Toward Buying Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder for Air Force Modernization

Bangladesh wants to acquire Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder fighter jets for the up gradation of its air force and defence. The statement came after a Bangladeshi defense delegation — led by the country’s principal commander, Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hassan — met with the head of the Pakistan Air Force, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, in Islamabad.

During the interaction, the JF-17 was also praised by Bangladesh for advanced technical features, cost effectivity and versatility. The jet is co-developed by Pakistan and China and can perform a variety of missions, including air defense, ground attack and aerial reconnaissance.

The two sides also discussed collaborating on military training and exchange programs and other defense projects. According to reports, Bangladesh plans to re-examine whether the JF-17C model can meet its needs.

The interest is in line with Bangladesh’s “Forces Goal 2030” plan to upgrade its military. If a deal is signed, it would not only enhance Bangladesh’s air power but also boost defense ties between the countries. Though no official agreement has been signed yet, this move reflects Bangladesh’s intention to modernize its defense at a while balancing off costs.
