Bangladesh on High Alert: Could a Major Earthquake Strike Soon?

In the past week, Bangladesh has felt two noticeable earthquakes, and in the last 90 days, over 50 smaller earthquakes have occurred. Experts are worried that these small quakes might be signs of a bigger one coming soon. In the last 15 years, there have been more than 150 small to medium-sized earthquakes, raising concerns that a major earthquake is on the way.

Dhaka is one of the 20 most earthquake-prone cities in the world, and experts fear a big earthquake could cause huge damage. However, the government has not yet taken effective action to reduce the risks.

Experts say the recent tremors could be warning signs of stronger earthquakes ahead. Bangladesh’s location makes it especially vulnerable. Cities like Sylhet, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chittagong, and Dhaka could be at high risk. On January 7, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Tibet killed over 100 people, and the tremors were felt in Bangladesh, Nepal, and India.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says Bangladesh is in an active earthquake zone. Experts explain that the tectonic plates around Bangladesh haven’t had a major earthquake for many years, meaning they could be storing up pressure for a big one. If an 8 or 9 magnitude earthquake happens, it could cause massive destruction, especially in Dhaka.

Dr. Zillur Rahman, a professor at Dhaka University, said that a 7-magnitude earthquake near the border would cause serious damage in places like Mymensingh, Rangpur, Sylhet, Chittagong, and Dhaka. Professor Mehedi Ahmed Ansari from BUET warned that if buildings are not repaired and if the city’s gas and electrical systems are not fixed, the damage could be much worse during an earthquake.

Experts are urging the government to take quick action to prepare for a possible major earthquake. Without proper measures, Bangladesh could face a huge disaster that would result in loss of life and widespread destruction.
