Findings and Regional Rankings

The study revealed that spirituality and religious beliefs are among the strongest influences that help people build a deep bond with nature.

Countries with market-driven or business-oriented economies, which score higher in the World Bank’s “Ease of Doing Business” index, tend to show weaker connections with nature.

Within the rankings, the United Kingdom placed 55th, while countries like the Netherlands, Canada, Germany, Israel, and Japan also appeared near the bottom. Among European nations, Croatia and Bulgaria made it to the top ten, while France ranked 19th.

A Reflection of Culture and Values

Researchers concluded that nations with strong cultural traditions, spirituality, and close ties to the environment—like Nepal, Iran, and Bangladesh—tend to value nature as part of their daily lives.

This highlights how economic development does not always strengthen a society’s emotional connection with the natural world.
