Bangladesh Sacrifices Over 91 Lakh Animals During Eid-ul-Azha 2025

Animals

This year, more than 91 lakh animals were sacrificed in Bangladesh during Eid-ul-Azha, according to a report from the Department of Livestock Services (DLS).

Total Number of Animals Sacrificed

According to official data, the total number of animals sacrificed was 91,36,734 (over 91 lakh). These animals were mainly cows, buffaloes, goats, and sheep.

  • Cows and buffaloes: 47,05,106
  • Goats and sheep: 44,30,668
  • Other animals: 960

Rajshahi Division Saw the Most Sacrifices

This Eid, the most animals were slaughtered in the Rajshahi division. 23,24,971 animals in all were sacrificed here.

Next to Rajshahi, the Dhaka division had the second-highest number of sacrifices, with 21,85,040 animals.

Other divisions had the following numbers:

  • Chattogram division: 17,53,732
  • Khulna division: 8,04,224
  • Rangpur division: 9,64,999
  • Barishal division: 4,00,783
  • Mymensingh division: 3,83,162
  • Sylhet division: 3,19,823

Among all the divisions, Sylhet had the lowest number of sacrificed animals.

How the Data Was Collected

The Department of Livestock Services clarified that stratified random sampling, a scientific technique, was used to gather this data.

They collected information from three types of villages — small, medium, and large — in each upazila (sub-district). At least one per cent of samples were collected from each village to calculate the total.

Over 33 Lakh Animals Remained Unsold

The report also mentioned that a total of 33,10,603 sacrificial animals remained unsold during Eid.

The department said that this is not unusual, as the production of animals was higher than the demand this year. This indicates that while fewer animals were purchased, more were grown and ready for sacrifice.

What Will Happen to the Unsold Animals?

The DLS said that these unsold animals will not go to waste. They can still be used for other religious rituals, festivals, and different ceremonies in the future.

Conclusion

Eid-ul-Azha in 2025 saw a record number of animals sacrificed across the country. While many animals were used in the religious celebration, a large number remained unsold due to high production. Throughout the year, the Department of Livestock Services guarantees that these animals will continue to be useful for various social and religious events.
