Bangladesh Taps Nepal for Power Amidst Crisis, Sidelines India

Due to unpaid dues, Bangladesh is now receiving significantly less electricity from Adani Power. According to a Reuters report, the power supply from Adani, which previously met Bangladesh’s needs, has now fallen to just 40% of the earlier amount. In this situation, Bangladesh has turned to Nepal to help bridge the shortfall, as multiple reports indicate. Nepal is expected to supply 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh.

However, there are doubts about whether this supply will be sufficient to address Bangladesh’s power deficit. Various sources suggest that the planned power from Nepal will only partially alleviate the shortage. Reuters reports that earlier in August, the Godda power plant in Jharkhand was supplying between 1,400 to 1,500 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh. By Thursday, however, this figure had sharply declined to only 520 megawatts.

Responding to the power crunch, Mohammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, the energy adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, stated, “We are settling dues in a phased manner. If any supplier stops the power supply, we will seek alternatives. We will not remain dependent on any single power provider.”

Under the agreement, Nepal will send electricity to India via the 400KV Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line, and in return, India will supply an equivalent amount of electricity to Bangladesh.

Nepal expects to earn approximately NPR 330 million from the sale of electricity.
