The chief adviser of the interim government Dr. Muhammad Yunus has directed the reform of the country’s labor laws in accordance with global standards. Ahead of the upcoming 353rd session of the International Labour Organization (ILO) he gave these instructions to the relevant officials on Wednesday (March 5) to improve the living standards of workers. During this time the chief adviser also instructed measures to ensure insurance coverage and healthcare facilities for workers in the labor sector.
Joining the meeting online, the chief adviser’s special envoy, Lutfe Siddiqui, said, “The country has already made significant progress in the labor sector. Some highly positive developments have taken place. However, experts believe we have not yet reached the desired level.” The meeting was attended by the labor and employment ministry’s adviser, M. Sakhawat Hossain, Secretary A.H.M. Shafiquzzaman, Secretary of the Law and Justice Division Sheikh Abu Taher, and ILO Bangladesh Country Representative Tuomo Poutiainen.
Bangladesh’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Geneva, Tarek Md. Ariful Islam, also joined the meeting virtually. The 353rd session of the ILO will be held in Geneva from March 10 to 20. Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. M. Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Labor and Employment, will lead the Bangladesh delegation at the ILO session.
