Bangladesh Launches First Traffic Management Centre to Boost Highway Safety

Bangladesh has launched its first Traffic Management Centre (TMC) in Dhaka to improve road safety, reduce traffic jams, and make highways more efficient. The project is funded by KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) with advanced technologies for real-time traffic monitoring, vehicle speed tracking, and accident management. Officials described it as a “landmark achievement” in modernizing transport in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s first-ever Traffic Management Centre (TMC) has officially started at Sarak Bhaban in Dhaka. The Traffic Management Centre aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve safety on highways, and increase operational efficiency.

Supported by KOICA and RHD

The project was implemented by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in partnership with the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) under the Road Transport and Highways Division (RTHD).

This initiative is part of a KOICA-funded project titled “Improving the Reliability and Safety on National Highway Corridors of Bangladesh through the Introduction of Intelligent Transport System (ITS)” (2020–2025). The project cost was US$8.93 million.

Focus on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway

The Traffic Management Centre mainly covers the N8 Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, which is the key route connecting to the Padma Bridge.

The system includes modern ITS technologies to monitor real-time traffic, track vehicle speeds, analyse traffic data, and manage incidents more effectively.

Guests at the Launch Event

The launch ceremony was held on Wednesday with several high officials:

  • PARK Young Sik, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh, attended as the chief guest.

  • Mohammad Abdur Rouf, Secretary of the Bridge Division, was present as the guest of honour.

  • Other attendees included Jihoon Kim, Country Director of KOICA, Syed Moinul Hasan, Chief Engineer of RHD, Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of BRTA, along with senior officials from RHD, Korea Expressway Corporation, and Bangladesh Highway Police.

Officials’ Reactions

Ambassador PARK said,

“Korea is proud to support sustainable infrastructure and connectivity initiatives of Bangladesh.”

Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rouf described the TMC as a “landmark achievement” for road safety and transport modernization.

BRTA Chairman Abu Momtaz Saad Uddin Ahmed added that the system could later be linked with vehicle inspection and driver databases to make enforcement stronger and improve safety compliance.
