Shooting at Kasba Border in Brahmanbaria

A young Bangladeshi man named Md Shakib (18) was killed after being shot by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) at the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria. The incident took place around 11:45pm on Sunday night (4 May) in the Madla area of Bayek Union. At the same time, an Indian citizen named Sujan Barman (35) was also injured in the same shooting.

Who Were the Victims?

The dead youth, Shakib, was from Nandannagar Old Cluster Village in Madla, under Kasba upazila.
The injured Indian man, Sujan Barman, is from Agartala in Tripura, a state in India. He is now receiving treatment at a private hospital in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

Police Version of the Incident

Kasba Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Abdul Kader, confirmed the incident. He said, “Shakib was shot by BSF at night. His family tried to take him to Dhaka for treatment, but he died on the way. His body has been sent for post-mortem at Brahmanbaria General Hospital.”

Why They Were at the Border

According to Kasba Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Samiul Islam, the two men went near the border to illegally bring a motorcycle into Bangladesh from India. While they were trying to do that, BSF noticed them and opened fire. As a result, both were shot.
UNO said, “The Indian man ran back into Bangladesh after getting injured. He is now receiving treatment in a hospital in Dhaka.”

Family and Locals in Shock

After Shakib’s body reached his home around 12:30pm on Monday, his family and neighbors were devastated. Locals described him as a quiet and polite boy. He came from a poor family and wanted to help with household income.

Tensions Rise in the Border Area

This shooting incident has caused fear and anger in the local area. People are now more worried about safety near the border. Many are asking why BSF used deadly force instead of arresting them.

Family Demands Justice and Proper Investigation

The family members of Md Shakib are devastated by his sudden and tragic death. They have demanded a proper investigation into the shooting and want justice for what they describe as a “cold-blooded act.”

According to Shakib’s relatives, he was not involved in any criminal activity and had gone to the border with the hope of recovering his stolen motorcycle. They also questioned why deadly force was used instead of capturing the individuals alive, especially since one of them was unarmed and a local resident.

Need for Better Border Rules

Human rights activists say that incidents like this happen too often at the border. They believe both Bangladesh and India should work together to improve border safety and avoid unnecessary deaths.
They are demanding a full investigation into the incident and better cooperation between the two countries to stop such tragedies.
