Bangladesh’s Real Map is Bigger Than We Think
Recently, Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus spoke on social media about the importance of the sea in Bangladesh’s economic future.
He said:
“বাংলাদেশের ম্যাপ, বাংলাদেশ বলতে আমরা ওটাই বুঝি। কিন্তু এটা তো ছোট বাংলাদেশ। আমাদের আসল বাংলাদেশ কোথায়? আমাদের পুরো সীমারেখা কোথায়? বিরাট বঙ্গোপসাগর কিন্তু আমাদের।”
Translati0n: “When we say Bangladesh, we only think of the land map. But that is the small Bangladesh. Our real Bangladesh is bigger — it includes the vast Bay of Bengal that belongs to us.”

The Sea is Full of Opportunities
Dr. Muhammad Yunus compared Bangladesh’s sea to a big pond that is full of fish but not properly used.
He said:
“এতবড় মহাসমুদ্র যে আমার সামনে আছে, তা আমাদের চিন্তার মধ্যেও আসে নাই… পুরো অর্থনীতির আয়োজনটা সমুদ্রে দিকে চিন্তা করে করতে হবে।”
Translation: “The huge sea in front of us never comes to our mind… We must plan our entire economy with the sea in focus.”
More Seaports Can Make Bangladesh Like Singapore
Talking about development, Yunus highlighted the importance of seaports.
He said:
“মাতারবাড়ীতে একটা সমুদ্র বন্দরের কাজ শেষ হয়ে আসছে, এরকম যদি দু’চারটা সমুদ্র বন্দর হয়, তাহলে সিঙ্গাপুরের মতো উন্নয়ন হতে খুব দেরি লাগবে না।”
Translation: “The construction of a seaport at Matarbari is almost done. If we can have a few more such seaports, Bangladesh can develop like Singapore.”

Sea Resources Are Being Taken by Others
Dr. Muhammad Yunus warned that while Bangladesh is not using its sea resources properly, other countries are already benefiting.
He said:
“আমাদের গ্যাস শুনেছেন কোনোদিন সমুদ্র থেকে পেয়েছি? কিন্তু আশেপাশের দেশগুলো সমুদ্র থেকে গ্যাস নিয়ে যাচ্ছে… তারা আমাদের গ্যাস নিয়ে যাচ্ছে আর আমরা বসে থেকে আঙ্গুল চুষছি।”
Translation: “Have you ever heard that we got gas from the sea? But neighboring countries are taking gas from there… They are taking our gas while we just sit doing nothing.”
Bangladesh Needs Ships and Facilities
Finally, he emphasized the need for infrastructure to use sea routes and resources.
Dr. Muhammad Yunus said:
“এই সমুদ্র কাজে লাগানোর জন্য জাহাজ দরকার, মাছ ধরার ট্রলার দরকার, প্রসেসিং দরকার… আমরা একটা চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর নিয়ে বসে আছি। সেটাও আসলে সমুদ্র বন্দর নয়। এটা নদীর একটা বন্দর।”
Translation: “To use the sea, we need ships, fishing trawlers, and processing facilities… We are just depending on Chattogram port, which is not even a real seaport but a river port.”
