BNP’s Internal Clash Turns Violent During Boundary Hearing

BNP

BNP leader Barrister Rumin Farhana alleged that during a hearing at the Election Commission, she was almost pushed down by her own party people. She expressed frustration, saying she has fought for BNP for 15 years, but now the same people are turning against her. Rumin also criticized the use of muscle power in politics and demanded fair boundary demarcation for her constituency.

Incident at Election Commission

BNP’s International Affairs Secretary Barrister Rumin Farhana said something happened on Sunday (24 August) that had never happened in 15 years.
She said,

“Almost by pushing me, they tried to make me fall. The BNP leaders and activists I have fought for the last 15 years are now pushing me.”

This incident happened during a hearing on the boundary dispute of Brahmanbaria-2 and 3 constituencies. The session even saw physical fights between two groups.

Blame on Opposing Candidate’s Group

Rumin said she wanted to present her case as a lawyer, but the atmosphere turned violent.
She stated,

“I hoped, out of respect for the Election Commission, they would not bring goons. But unfortunately, I saw the candidate from Brahmanbaria-3 entering with 20–25 people, behaving like thugs. It was very shameful and disrespectful to the commission.”

Violence and Allegations

She also showed journalists photos, claiming that people were beaten and forced to give confessions in Brahmanbaria-3.
She said,

“This is their nature. Election has not even started yet, and people are being beaten for boundary issues.”

Rumin added,

“I did not bring goons. If I wanted, I could. But I came with decent people. What happened today proves how they operate.”

Reaction After Push

She expressed her frustration saying,

“What never happened in 25 years happened today. Almost by pushing, they tried to make me fall. The BNP leaders I fought for the last 15 years are now pushing me. Well, if I push, a push will come back, right?”

She also claimed a man in a Punjabi pushed her first, and later her supporters retaliated when they were attacked.

Demand for Fair Boundary

On boundary issues, Rumin argued for returning to the pre-2008 demarcation.
She said,

“The fascist government changed the boundary for their own benefit. We do not accept that. We want to go back to the boundary that was before 2008, which was also the wish of Begum Khaleda Zia.”

She explained the current imbalance in voter numbers:

  • Brahmanbaria-3 (Sadar and Bijoynagar) – about 6.10 lakh voters

  • Ashuganj – about 4.20 lakh voters

  • Three unions (Budhanti, Chandpura, Harashpur) – about 1 lakh voters

She argued these unions should be part of Sarail, not Bijoynagar.
Rumin said,

“People from these unions do most of their official work in Sarail. Travel to Bijoynagar takes 1.5–2 hours, but to Sarail only 15–20 minutes. So, naturally, they belong to Sarail.”
