Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has stated that his party is not in favor of holding elections based on the proportional representation (PR) system at this time. He made these remarks on Monday (July 14) after a meeting at the National Consensus Commission.
Salahuddin explained that while most political parties agree on the idea of a bicameral parliament, there is significant debate over how it should be structured and function.

He said, “Although there is broad agreement on having a bicameral parliament, there are differences regarding its composition and role. Our position remains unchanged. We proposed a bicameral system based on our previous 31-point plan, where the upper house would represent prominent figures from various sectors of the country as well as marginalized communities.”
The BNP leader further mentioned that according to the party’s view, the upper house should consist of 100 members. He also noted that despite extensive discussions, many parties have not reached consensus. Some parties, he added, do not even consider a bicameral parliament necessary.
