Cheque Gift at Political Rally Goes Viral
A BNP worker named Nur Kasem (37) has drawn widespread attention after giving a Tk 10 lakh cheque to BNP leader Kamruzzaman Kamrul during a political rally in Sunamganj’s Jamalganj upazila.
The event took place at Sachna Bazar on Saturday afternoon, where Kamrul — a BNP nomination aspirant for the Sunamganj-1 constituency — was the chief guest. He is also a former joint general secretary of the district BNP and former chairman of Tahirpur Upazila Parishad.
Worker Has Only Tk 3,412 in Account
Surprisingly, it was later revealed that Nur Kasem had only Tk 3,412 in his bank account.
Kasem, a farmer and small brick trader, lives in Mandiyata village, on the edge of Tanguar Haor in Tahirpur upazila. He has little formal education and can barely sign his name.
In a phone interview, Kasem explained:
Translation: “I like him. He is good for poor people. I gave it out of emotion. I don’t have that much money. If people ask me to pay it, I’ll sell my land in Sripur Bazar and manage it.”

Emotional Gesture, Not Political Move
Kasem said he had gone to the rally just to watch but got emotional when he saw Kamrul receiving garlands and gifts from supporters. He then presented the cheque along with a garland.
Translation: “I’m not a bad person. I work hard for my living. I’m not educated or deeply into politics. I just like him from my heart, that’s why I did it.”

BNP Leader Kamrul Responds
BNP leader Kamrul responded by saying he appreciated the love but would not keep the cheque.
Translation: “This is his love for me and the party. I will accept his love but return the cheque.”
He also mentioned that many supporters gave him garlands made of flowers and small amounts of money — Tk 10, Tk 100, or Tk 500 — as a sign of support.
