1 killed, at least 8 injured in bus collision in Patiya, Chittagong

A man named Mohan Das (50) died in a head-on collision between two passenger buses in the Kamalmunsi Hat area of ​​Patiya upazila of Chittagong. The accident occurred around 9:45 am on Wednesday. The deceased Mohan Das is a resident of Putivila area of ​​Lohagara upazila and is a paan trader by profession.

Heartbreaking moment: Daughter’s sobs

Mohan Das was with his higher secondary school student daughter Baishakhi Das at the time of the accident. Hearing the news of her father’s death, he broke down in tears while standing on the hospital balcony.

While crying, she said,

“How can people be so bad? They didn’t even help my dying father a bit. How did they snatch 50,000 taka from my deceased father’s pocket.”

Details of the accident

According to police and local sources, a bus named ‘Eagle Paribahan’ was going from Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar and ‘Marsa Paribahan’ was coming from Cox’s Bazar to Chittagong. When the two buses reached the Kamalmunsi Hat area, they collided head-on. At least 9 people, including Mohan Das, were injured. Later, police and locals rescued the injured and took them to the Patiya Upazila Health Complex.

Condition of the casualties

According to the Upazila Health Complex sources, the injured include Joynal (30) and his son Mohammad (5), Tipu Chowdhury (36), Mintu Das (19), Anwar (38), Taher (45), Nurul Azad (29) and Shirin Akhtar (47).

On-duty doctor Samia Rowshan said that Mohan Das had one of his hands amputated and died before being brought to the hospital. Among the injured, children Mohammad (5) and Taher (45) have been sent to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The others have been discharged after primary treatment.

Family background

Relatives said that Mohan Das had gone to a relative’s wedding in Chittagong city with his two daughters. On Wednesday morning, he was returning home with his two daughters Annie and Baishakhi Das and two grandchildren. Although Mohan Das died in the accident, his daughter and grandchildren who were with him are unharmed.

Allegations of looting

Mohan Das’ daughter Baishakhi Das alleged that after the accident, some people first arrived at the scene, but instead of rescuing the injured, they took money from her father’s pocket. Later, the police and locals came and carried out the rescue work.

Administration’s statement

Officer-in-charge of Patiya Crossing Highway Police Station Harunur Rashid said that upon receiving the information, the police quickly reached the scene, rescued the injured, sent them to the health complex and decongested the road.

Patiya Fire Service in-charge Rajesh Barua said that they rescued five people from the scene. Initially, it is believed that the accident occurred due to the driver losing control. The police said that necessary legal action will be taken in this incident.
