Abdul Hannan Masud, the party’s senior joint chief coordinator, has expressed strong anger over the attack on a peaceful program of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Gopalganj. He made this reaction in a status posted on his verified ID on social media Facebook at around 4:30 pm today, Wednesday (July 16).
He wrote in the status with a warning,
Translation: “You will have to pay a heavy price for this, this government too. You cannot provide security to national leaders in a district, they will hold elections! At this time, he also called for controlling the country first.”
Earlier, although the NCP march and rally were scheduled to be held at a designated location in Gopalganj city at noon, some leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League first launched an ambush there. When the attackers resisted the sudden attack and vandalism, they retreated and fled.
Later, when the NCP leaders and activists were leaving the scene after the rally, a group of armed men surrounded them and tried to attack them again. They blocked the vehicles of NCP workers, leaders and police members from all sides. Police and army members fired sound grenades and blank bullets to bring the situation under control. The NCP leaders and activists then turned their cars around and safely moved away.
Earlier in the morning, Awami League and Chhatra League leaders and activists cut down trees and blocked the road on the Ghonapara-Tekerhat regional road in Gandhiyashur area of Sadar upazila. When they went to observe the situation, the UNO convoy was attacked.
In addition, a police vehicle was attacked, vandalized and set on fire in the Ulpur area of Gopalganj Sadar. Several police personnel were reportedly injured in the incident.
Leaders of the Jatiya Nagorik Party strongly condemned the attacks and demanded immediate arrest and trial of the culprits.
