Case Application Submitted in Dhaka Cyber Tribunal

A case application has been filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025 against digital creator Shaheen Mahmud (MH) for allegedly making defamatory remarks about BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman on Facebook.

The application was submitted today (19 November) by Iltutmish Sawdagar, Assistant General Secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Lawyers Forum, in the court of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Mohammad Saidur Rahman Gazi. Another unnamed person has also been listed as an anonymous accused.

The court has recorded the plaintiff’s testimony and kept the order pending.

State counsel Md Rafiqul Islam said the Tribunal is expected to set a date for the order later in the day.

Tarique Rahman’s Earlier Statement

According to the complaint, during a virtual address at a party rally on 12 November, Tarique Rahman said:

“বর্তমান পরিস্থিতিতে আলুতে ন্যায্য দাম পাওয়া গণভোটের চেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।”

Translation: “In the current situation, getting a fair price for potatoes is more important than a referendum.”

Accused’s Facebook Response

Three days later, on 15 November, the accused allegedly posted the following statement from his verified Facebook account:

“৮৮ কোটি টাকা দিয়ে বুলেটপ্রুফ গাড়ি না কিনে কৃষকদের দিলে তারা পেঁয়াজ-আলুর ন্যায্য দাম পেতো।”

Translation: “If he had given the Tk88 crore to the farmers instead of buying a bulletproof car, they would have gotten a fair price for onions and potatoes.”

Allegations Made by the Plaintiff

The complaint claims that the post was a deliberate attempt to damage the honour, patriotism, and political credibility of Tarique Rahman by spreading false and baseless information. The plaintiff states that no bulletproof car was purchased for Tk88 crore, and the post was intended to mislead the public.

The plaintiff further alleges that the accused intentionally defamed Tarique Rahman’s political and social standing, which violates Sections 23(2), 25(1), 27(1), and 27(2) of the Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025.
