OpenAI has launched a new Study Mode in ChatGPT, designed to help students learn by guiding them through topics instead of giving direct answers. Available to both free and paid users, the feature will also be added to ChatGPT Edu, a version tailored for schools and universities.
Rather than offering solutions outright, Study Mode uses techniques like Socratic questioning and knowledge checks to encourage critical thinking and deeper understanding. It starts by assessing the student’s current knowledge, then breaks complex topics into easier parts. The mode can be turned on or off during conversations.

Developed with input from educators and learning scientists, the feature is grounded in proven teaching methods. While still in its early stage and not yet fully integrated into the core model OpenAI plans to improve it based on user feedback. Future updates will include more personalized learning paths, progress tracking, and better visual aids.
The move comes amid growing debate about how AI should be used in education highlighting the need to support learning without encouraging over-reliance on quick answers.
