Chattogram Port, the busiest seaport in Bangladesh, is on track to set a new record in container handling by the end of this year. As of December 22, the port had already processed approximately 32 lakh TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), and it is expected to reach around 32.8 lakh TEUs by the year’s end. This marks a significant milestone, especially since the port entered the “three million club” in 2019 by handling 30.88 lakh TEUs.
The port reached its highest container handling record in 2021, with 32.15 lakh TEUs. Currently, with a daily handling capacity of 7,000 to 8,000 TEUs, the port has remained resilient despite challenges such as global crises, political instability, and natural disasters. The steady growth in import and export trade, combined with improved port management and cooperation from stakeholders, has been crucial to this success.
The port’s global ranking, currently 67th on Lloyd’s List, is expected to improve as the number of containers handled continues to rise. This growth is viewed as a sign of recovery for Bangladesh’s economy, with businesses benefiting from the increased throughput. The port’s container storage capacity stands at 53,518 TEUs, and despite occasional congestion, operations have been efficiently managed.
The Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association has praised this achievement, noting that it reflects the country’s expanding foreign trade. This success not only enhances the port’s global reputation but also strengthens Bangladesh’s position in global trade.
