Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, may announce the date of the 13th National Election in his televised speech on either August 5 or August 8. Sources inside the government suggest the final decision on the date and time of the speech has not yet been made, but it is expected to be connected to one of two significant national events.
Possible Speech Dates Linked to National History
According to several government sources, Dr. Yunus is likely to give his upcoming national speech on either August 5 or August 8.
-
August 5 marks the day when Prime Minister Hasina’s government fell due to a mass uprising led by students and civilians.
-
August 8 is the day when Dr. Yunus’s interim government was formed.
An official source noted:
“তাই ভাষণ ৫ আগস্টই দিতে পারেন।”
“That’s why he may deliver the speech on August 5.”

Election Date Likely to Be Declared
Dr. Yunus is expected to announce the schedule for the upcoming election during the televised address. Once the date is declared, he will call upon the Election Commission to formally publish the election timetable.
In a recent meeting on July 26, Dr. Yunus assured political parties that the election date would be announced soon.
After that meeting, Mostafa Jamal Haider, the leader of the 12-party alliance and chairman of Jatiya Party (Kazi Zafar), said:
“প্রধান উপদেষ্টা ক্যাটাগরিকালি বলেছেন, আগামী চার-পাঁচ দিনের মধ্যে নির্বাচনের একটা সুনির্দিষ্ট সময় তিনি ঘোষণা করবেন।”
“The Chief Adviser clearly said he would announce a specific election date within the next four to five days.”
Preparations Already Underway
Back on July 9, Dr. Yunus instructed the authorities to complete election preparations by December. In a meeting with law enforcement officials, he hinted that the election could be held in February or April 2026.
Earlier, during a June 13 meeting in London with Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of BNP, Dr. Yunus reportedly said:
“নির্বাচন ২০২৬ সালের রমজানের আগেই হতে পারে।”
“The election could be held before Ramadan 2026.”
This points to the first half of February 2026 as the most likely timeframe.
