Chief Adviser takes a stand to stop exploitation in the Qurbani skin trade

In a move aimed at addressing long-standing issues, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has announced the formation of a high-level committee to ensure that people receive a fair price for sacrificial animal skins during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. The committee will also oversee the transportation of animals, waste management and all aspects related to the Eid festivities.

This decision was made during a meeting on Sunday, May 4, at the State Guest House Jamuna. In his speech, Professor Yunus highlighted a critical issue that has plagued the country for years: the unfair prices people receive for the skins of sacrificial animals.

He pointed out that this situation often leaves the poorest members of society, who rely on the income from selling animal skins, in a vulnerable position. The Chief Adviser said that “For far too long, we’ve seen people being deprived of fair prices for sacrificial animal skins.” “This has harmed the very people who need it most. They rely on this income, and we must put an end to this mismanagement.”

He also raised concerns about the presence of syndicates controlling the price of these skins. “We will do everything in our power to make sure that no one is exploited, and that people are paid fairly for their skins without interference from any syndicate or mismanagement.”

In addition to the pricing issues Professor Yunus emphasized the importance of treating animals humanely during transport and in markets. He stressed that the proper use of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in the leather processing industry must also be ensured.

To oversee these initiatives, he instructed the formation of a high-level committee, which will be led by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin. The committee will also include key figures like-

  • Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter
  • Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan
  • Roads and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan

And others too who will ensure that all aspects are handled smoothly. “The goal is simple: to create a fair, humane, and well-organized system for everyone involved,” Professor Yunus said.

The committee will work on implementing these guidelines ahead of the Eid celebrations, with a focus on both protecting the interests of the people and ensuring that the process is ethical and efficient. The Chief Adviser is determined that this time, the system will be different and people will receive the respect and fair treatment they deserve.
