Chinese Solar Giant Longi to Invest in Bangladesh Energy Sector

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will visit China, in what is being described as the most important trip in the 50 years of Bangladesh-China relations. Most notably, the visit could provide a significant economic return, especially in the renewable energy sector. Among the biggest developments, Chinese solar giant Longi will finalize its plans for solar panel manufacturing in Bangladesh. It is a major milestone for the country’s renewable energy sector. The move could help stimulate the country’s renewable energy sector and lead to new jobs. Longi is set to invest in Bangladesh, along with at least two other Chinese companies, as confirmed recently by Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen.

Yunus will also receive an honorary doctorate and deliver a speech at Peking University, which is one of the most prestigious Chinese institutions. On this visit he will also attend the Boao Forum for Asia, sometimes referred to as the “Davos of the East,” at which he will address “Asia in a Changing World: Towards a Shared Future.”

A highlight of the trip will be Yunus’ meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 28. A joint statement will presumably be released by both sides following the meeting. For Bangladesh, this visit could be a turning point for relations with China as it paves the path for Bangladesh to get more investment, better infrastructure and closer cooperation between the two countries.
