Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Haseeb Aziz has ordered that if someone pulls out a weapon in front of the police, they will have to open fire in self-defense. He gave this instruction in a wireless message, which was issued after SI Abu Saeed Rana was seriously injured in an attack by miscreants at Ishan Mistry Ghat in Chittagong. The commissioner clarified that regardless of whether the attacker has a firearm or a sharp weapon, the moment the weapon is pulled out, the police will have to open fire and the best use of government ammunition will be ensured.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has issued strict instructions – if anyone pulls out a weapon in front of the police, they will open fire in self-defense. He gave this instruction to all CMP members in a wireless message on Tuesday (August 12) night.
Instructions issued after the attack
The reason behind this instruction is the incident of the attack by miscreants at Ishan Mistry Ghat in Chittagong. On Monday night, while chasing an Awami League procession, Sub-Inspector (SI) Abu Sayeed alias Rana of Bandar Police Station was attacked. He was seriously injured by being hacked with a sharp weapon. The two constables who were with SI Rana at the time of the incident were carrying shotguns but did not use them.
Police reluctance to use weapons
According to police sources, many police members do not want to use weapons even in the face of attack, because if they die in a shooting, they have to face a long legal process. Considering this situation, the CMP Commissioner gave a verbal instruction that the police will take action in advance under the law in case of self-defense.
Instructions on the use of weapons and ammunition
The CMP Commissioner further directed that all ranks of the police station’s mobile party, patrol party and DB will have to carry weapons as per the weapons and ammunition privileges that existed before August 5, 2024. No patrol, patrol, DB or checkpost team will go out on duty without firearms.
Commissioner Hasib Aziz clearly said—
“Shooting will be done as soon as someone pulls out a weapon in front of a police patrol party. It can be a firearm, or it can be a sharp weapon. Shooting must be done the moment the weapon is pulled out. One cannot wait for an attack to occur. The bullet can be fired in the head, chest or back. The best use of government ammunition must be ensured.”
He further added that according to sections 96 to 106 of the Penal Code, all police officers have the right to self-defense, and there cannot be any delay in exercising that right.
