Court Grants One-Day Remand for Dinat Jahan Ador in Domestic Worker Abuse Case

Dinat Jahan Ador has been granted a one-day remand by a Dhaka court following her arrest on charges of repeatedly abusing a 13-year-old domestic worker, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The ruling came after a hearing on Sunday (October 20) at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court, where Metropolitan Magistrate Afnaan Sumi presided. During the proceedings, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Obadur Rahman from the Bhatarah Police Station, presented Dinat in court and requested a five-day remand for further investigation. However, the court only approved a one-day remand. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki outlined the horrific details of the abuse, stating that Dinat had subjected the minor, Kalpona, to medieval-style torture. He revealed that she had been provided only one meal of spoiled food per day and had not been paid her meager wages. In addition, hot water had been used to scald her body. The plaintiff’s lawyer, Mohammad Tariqul Islam Tarik, expressed disappointment at the court’s decision to grant only one day’s remand in such a sensitive case, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. He hopes that if a longer remand is deemed necessary, the court will consider it. The case came to light when Bhatarah Police rescued Kalpona from the Bashundhara residential area on Saturday afternoon. Alongside the arrest of Dinat, Kalpona was found to have suffered severe injuries, including burns from hot water and the loss of three teeth. Parts of her body had also been burned with a hair straightener. Currently, Kalpona is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for her serious injuries. The investigation into this disturbing case continues as authorities aim to ensure justice for the young victim.
