Chamber Court Decision

The Supreme Court’s Chamber Court has stayed the High Court’s order suspending the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. The court issued the order on Monday (September 1) afternoon. DUCSU lawyer Shishir Monir confirmed the matter to the media.

High Court stay order

Earlier, a High Court bench headed by Justice Habibul Gani and Justice Sheikh Tahsin Ali had suspended the DUCSU elections until October 30. The High Court gave this order after hearing a writ petition challenging the candidacy of GS candidate SM Farhad, nominated by the United Students’ Alliance.

University authorities’ action

Lawyer Shishir Monir said,

ডাকসু নির্বাচনে হাইকোর্টের দেয়া স্থগিতাদেশের বিরুদ্ধে চেম্বার আদালতে আবেদন করে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ। পরে এক আদেশে হাইকোর্টের রায় স্থগিত করেন চেম্বার আদালত। ফলে ডাকসু নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানে কোনো বাধা রইল না।
Translation: Dhaka University authorities appealed to the Chamber Court against the High Court’s stay on the DUCSU elections. Later, the Chamber Court suspended the High Court’s ruling in an order. As a result, there was no obstacle to the DUCSU elections.

He also ensure this in his Facebook post and hw wrote,

হাইকোর্টের আদেশ স্থগিত করেছেন মাননীয় চেয়ার জজ আদালত। আলহামদুলিল্লাহ।
Translation: The Honorable Chair Judge of the court has suspended the High Court order. Alhamdulillah.

According to the announced schedule, the elections for the central committee and hall councils of DUCSU will be held on September 9.

Controversial candidature

The main issue of the postponement was SM Farhad, who is contesting the GS post from the United Students Alliance. He is the candidate of this alliance supported by Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and is currently the president of Chhatra Shibir’s Dhaka University branch.
