The International Crimes Tribunal has announced the verdict in Abu Sayeed Murder Case, known as the first martyr of the July movement. The court sentenced two former police officers to death, three to life imprisonment, and others to various prison terms.

Court Panel and Verdict Announcement

The verdict was delivered on Thursday (April 9) by a three-member bench led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. Other members of the tribunal included Judge Md. Manzurul Bashid and Judge Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

Death and Life Sentences

Those sentenced to death:

  • Former Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amir Hossain
  • Constable Sujan Chandra

Those sentenced to life imprisonment:

  • Former Assistant Police Commissioner Arifuzzaman
  • Former Inspector Robiul Islam Nayan
  • Sub-Inspector Bibhuti Bhushan Roy

Other Convictions

  • 10 years in prison:
    • Teachers Mashior Rahman and Asaduzzaman Mondal
    • Former Vice Chancellor Hasibur Rashid
    • Former Rangpur Commissioner Moniruzzaman
  • 5 years in prison:
    • Dr. Sarowat Hossain
    • Former ADC Abu Maruf Hossain
    • Former Additional Police Commissioner Shah Nur Alam Patowari
    • Former Proctor Shariful Islam
  • 3 years in prison:
    • Former student leaders Mahafuzur Rahman Shamim, Fazle Rabbi, Akhtar Hossain
    • Sejan Ahmed, Dhananjay Kumar, and Babul Hossain

Case Background

The investigation report in this widely discussed case was submitted on June 24 last year. Charges were framed on August 6, and the trial began on August 27. A total of 25 witnesses, including the Investigation Officer, testified during the trial.
