Devastating Fire on St. Martin’s Island: Three Resorts Destroyed

Big fire breaks out at St. Martin’s Island Cox’s Bazar early Tuesday, January 14, 2025.  The fire burned three famous resorts, but no one was injured. The fire broke out at about 2:30 AM in the Golachipa area near the island’s western beach. Witnesses said it started at Beach Valley Resort and rapidly spread to nearby resorts.

A local resident Nur said that Shairi, Beach Valley and Kingshuk were completely burned. The fire was spreading too fast to be able to save anything, . Local people attempted to extinguish the blaze at first. The Coast Guard, Navy and Tourist Police arrived later to assist. Fire was controlled after about 1.5 hours of work and finally stopped around 4 AM.

Investigators found that the fire may have started from garbage burnt on the beach by a nearby resort. The disaster was caused by the spread of the flames. Zamir, a local resident said there is no fire station in St. Martin’s island. That made it more difficult to fight the fire and contain it quickly.

The closure of these resorts will be a huge loss for St. Martin’s tourism, which relies on visitors. Others are calling for more stringent safety standards to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
