Dhaka-8 constituency has recently come under the spotlight after reports circulated that Jamaat-e-Islami’s potential candidate could be Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem.

Following the wave of speculation on social media about his candidacy under the Daripalla (scale) symbol, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir issued an official clarification.

On Saturday (6 December) around 9 pm, the organization’s central publicity secretary, Azizur Rahman Azad, posted a status from his verified social media account addressing the matter. In his Facebook post, the central publicity secretary wrote:

‘সাদিক কায়েম, ঢাকা-৮ থেকে নির্বাচন করছেন। এমন খবরের সত্যতা যাচাই করতে অনেকেই নক দিচ্ছেন। ইতোমধ্যে ২/১ জন সাংবাদিক এই ইস্যুতে ফেসবুকে পোস্টও করেছেন। ছাত্রশিবিরের কেন্দ্রীয় সভাপতি দুদিন আগে মিডিয়াতে এ বিষয়ে স্পষ্ট বক্তব্য দিয়েছেন।’ 

Translation: “Many people are knocking us to verify whether Abu Shadik Kayem is contesting the election from Dhaka-8. A couple of journalists have already posted about it. The central president of Chhatra Shibir gave a clear statement to the media two days ago.”

He further added:

Translation: “We reiterate—so far, the central organization has not taken any decision to nominate any Shibir member for the upcoming national election. If the central organization takes any election-related decision, we will officially announce it, InshaAllah.”
