A student of Dhaka University (DU) died early Monday morning after falling from a building at Jagannath Hall, one of the university’s residential halls.
The incident took place on 14 July, and the deceased has been identified as Sanjay Baraik (28), a student from the 2020–21 academic session of the Department of Anthropology.
Student Was Found Lying on the Road Inside the Hall
According to Manik Kumar Das, a staff member of Jagannath Hall, the incident came to light when a night guard (darowan) called him early in the morning and informed him that a student was found lying injured beside the road inside the hall compound.
“I immediately rushed there and, with the help of others, took him to the hospital in a seriously injured condition,” said Manik.
Declared Dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital
Md Masud, Assistant In-Charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the death.
“He was brought to the hospital in critical condition. After examining him, the doctors declared him dead,” said Masud.

University staff had brought Sanjay to the hospital.
“We were informed that he died after falling from the hall building, but we are yet to confirm whether it was accidental or intentional,” he added.
CCTV Footage Shows the Fall, But Circumstances Still Unclear
According to Jagannath Hall authorities, CCTV footage shows Sanjay falling from the building, but it is still unclear whether he jumped or accidentally fell. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
A Facebook Post Hours Before the Tragedy
Just a few hours before his death, Sanjay posted an emotional status on his Facebook profile, where he apologized to everyone and admitted to his past mistakes.
In his post, Sanjay wrote:
“I’ve realized my mistake. I have disturbed someone continuously, and blaming others for my actions was wrong. I sincerely apologize to everyone. I have done injustice day after day. It was wrong of me to hide my own faults by blaming others. If I have harmed anyone in any way, I take full responsibility. I ask for forgiveness.”
This post has now drawn emotional reactions and concern from friends, classmates, and social media users who believe the message was possibly linked to his final moments.
Family and Background
Sanjay was originally from Chunarughat Upazila in Habiganj district. He had been studying at Dhaka University as a student of Anthropology and was residing at Jagannath Hall.
Investigation Underway
University and police authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the fall and death. As of now, no official statement has confirmed whether it was a case of suicide or an accident.
The incident has shaken the campus community, with many students mourning the untimely death of their fellow student.
