While speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Summit in Miami on Friday, President Donald Trump jokingly referred to the Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump.” He said:
“Iran has to open up the Strait of Trump — I mean, Hormuz,”
The audience laughed at the remark, and Trump then jokingly apologized before saying the media might claim it was a mistake.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but highly strategic waterway located between Iran and Oman. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and is considered one of the world’s most critical oil transit chokepoints. Around 20 million barrels of oil pass through the strait each day, making any disruption there a major threat to global energy supply and prices.

Comment Comes Amid Ongoing Iran Conflict
Trump’s comment came as tensions remain high in the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which is nearing its second month. Iran’s ability to restrict or threaten shipping through the strait has already contributed to significant disruption in global oil markets. The U.S. administration has previously claimed major success against Iran’s military capabilities, while also saying that diplomatic negotiations are ongoing. However, Iranian officials have denied holding direct talks.
Talk of Renaming and Control of the Strait
According to media reports, Trump has even considered the possibility of jointly controlling the strait with Iran’s leadership as part of a potential resolution to the conflict. Some reports also suggested he was thinking about renaming the strait the “Strait of America.” This is not the first time Trump has publicly joked about renaming major landmarks or institutions using his own name, reflecting his long-standing personal branding style from his business career.
