A New Milestone in Kidney Transplants

Famous Bangladeshi kidney specialist Professor Dr. Kamrul Islam, the founder and managing director of the Centre for Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital, is set to reach a historic milestone — 1,800 successful kidney transplants.

Known for providing free kidney transplant surgeries, Dr. Kamrul has become a symbol of hope for thousands of patients suffering from kidney failure in Bangladesh.

Current Challenges in Kidney Treatment

On the occasion of World Kidney Day, Dr. Kamrul Islam shared insights about the challenges facing kidney treatment in Bangladesh.

He said, “Kidney transplants in the country are far fewer than what is actually needed.”

Dr. Kamrul Islam explained that the shortage of skilled medical staff, high medicine costs, legal complexities, and lack of government funding are major barriers to expanding transplant facilities.

Translation: “We haven’t been able to build skilled manpower for organ transplants. Medicine costs are too high, there are legal complications, no government funding, and public interest in cadaveric transplants remains very low.”

Need for Awareness and Collaboration

Dr. Kamrul Islam emphasized the importance of collective efforts to promote organ donation.

Translation: “Religious, legal, and social leaders must come forward to strengthen cadaveric organ donation and transplantation programs.”

High Success Rates but Post-Transplant Risks Remain

Research shows that 96% of patients survive one year after transplant, 85% after three years, and 75% after five years. However, after ten years, many die due to infections — not kidney failure.

Kidney Transplant Situation in Bangladesh

Every year, around 10,000 patients in Bangladesh need kidney transplants, but only about 365 surgeries are performed — merely 3.65% of the demand.
So far, the country has completed just over 3,500 transplants in total.

There are currently 3.8 crore kidney patients nationwide, and about 40,000 of them depend on regular dialysis.
