Dr. Muhammad Yunus: Bangladesh’s Youth Will Prevent Islamist Extremism from Rising

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, has firmly stated that Islamist extremists will not come to power in the country. His comments came during an interview with *The Economist* on Friday, December 20.

In the interview, Dr. Yunus emphasized the impartiality of Bangladesh’s youth towards religion, highlighting their drive to build a new and progressive nation. He reassured that the youth of Bangladesh are committed to preventing any rise of extremist ideologies in the country.

Bangladesh was named *The Economist’s* Country of the Year for 2024, recognizing the country’s significant achievements in the past year. The magazine highlighted the student-led uprising that overthrew the authoritarian regime of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, marking the beginning of a new era for Bangladesh. Dr. Yunus’s interview followed this recognition, celebrating the country’s transformation.

“We are elated and extremely proud of what we have achieved,” Dr. Yunus remarked. “The student uprising marked the beginning of a new Bangladesh. It’s a clear sign of how the youth are leading the way for change.” He emphasized that the country’s young generation, particularly the students, played a pivotal role in this shift.

Responding to concerns about the resurgence of Islamic extremism, Dr. Yunus assured that such a threat is not likely. He explained that the youth in Bangladesh are forward-thinking, focused on progress, and largely indifferent to religious divides.

Dr. Yunus also pointed to the recent youth-led protests as a demonstration of their strength and commitment. He particularly praised the active role young women played in the movement. “We must pay attention to the dreams of our youth, especially the young women, and ensure they are given the opportunity to fulfill them,” he said.

He also highlighted the capability of Bangladesh’s youth, noting that three young leaders from the uprising have been appointed to the interim government’s cabinet. “These young leaders represent the future, not the past,” Dr. Yunus stated. “They are already making a remarkable impact in their roles.”
When asked about his plans after the upcoming elections, Dr. Yunus shared that he had been called away from his prior work. “I was enjoying my work before I was brought back from Paris for this role,” he explained. “If I could return to what I was doing before, I would be very happy to do so.”
