What Happened at LabAid?
In October 2023, Rahib Reza, a 31-year-old patient, died at LabAid Hospital. Following this, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) formed an investigation committee. The report found that:

Gross medical negligence by Dr. Mamun Al Mahtab Swapnil and his team from the Department of Interventional Hepatology at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Flaws and mismanagement in the hospital’s endoscopy system.

Investigation Report Recommendations
The report recommended punitive actions against the concerned doctors due to their negligence. Upon reviewing the findings, BMDC decided to impose the five-year suspension on Dr. Swapnil.

Dr. Swapnil has the right to appeal the decision in court. However, unless the court issues a stay order, he will not be permitted to provide any medical services either in person or online during the suspension period.

The suspension of a prominent and widely known physician has stirred significant public reaction. Many believe this sends a strong message about accountability in the healthcare sector and the consequences of medical negligence.
