Appeal for Independent Palestine
Dr. Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, called for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He made the appeal in his speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Friday night (Bangladesh time, 9:30 pm).
Warning Against Extreme Nationalism
In his speech, the chief adviser said:
“আমি সবসময় মানুষকে আশার বাণী শুনিয়েছি, কখনও ভয় দেখিয়ে কিছু করা আমি সমর্থন করি নি। কিন্তু আজ আমাকে সেখান থেকে সরে এসে ভয়ঙ্কর কিছু কথা বলতে হচ্ছে। আজ আমি সতর্ক করছি— চরম জাতীয়তাবাদ, অন্যের ক্ষতি হয় এমন ভূরাজনীতি এবং অন্যের দুর্ভোগ ও পীড়নের প্রতি ঔদাসীন্য বহু দশকের পরিশ্রমে আমরা যে অগ্রগতি অর্জন করেছি তা ধ্বংস করে দিচ্ছে।”
Translation: “I have always shared messages of hope with people and never supported doing something by instilling fear. But today, I have to step aside and speak some serious words. I warn today—extreme nationalism, geopolitics that harms others, and indifference to the suffering and oppression of others are destroying the progress we have achieved over many decades.”

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
Dr. Yunus highlighted the tragic situation in Gaza:
“এর সবচেয়ে মর্মান্তিক চিত্র আমরা দেখছি গাজায়। শিশুরা না খেয়ে অকাল মৃত্যুবরণ করছে, বেসামরিক জনগোষ্ঠীকে নির্বিচারে হত্যা করা হচ্ছে, হাসপাতাল, স্কুলসহ একটি গোটা জনপদ নিশ্চিহ্ন করে ফেলা হচ্ছে। জাতিসংঘের স্বাধীন তদন্ত কমিশনের সঙ্গে আমরাও একমত যে আমাদের চোখের সামনেই একটি নির্বিচার গণহত্যা সংঘটিত হচ্ছে; আমাদের দুর্ভাগ্য যে মানবজাতির পক্ষ থেকে এর অবসানে আমরা সর্বোচ্চ চেষ্টা করছি না। এ অবস্থা চলতে থাকলে ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্ম ও ইতিহাস আমাদের ক্ষমা করবে না।”
Translation: “The most tragic picture is in Gaza. Children are dying of hunger, civilians are being killed indiscriminately, and entire communities including hospitals and schools are being destroyed. We agree with the UN independent inquiry commission that a brutal genocide is happening before our eyes; unfortunately, humanity is not making its maximum effort to stop it. If this continues, future generations and history will not forgive us.”
Call for Two-State Solution
On behalf of the people of Bangladesh and the world’s conscientious citizens, Dr. Yunus demanded a two-state solution:
“পূর্ব জেরুজালেমকে রাজধানী করে একটি স্বাধীন ফিলিস্তিন রাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে এ সমস্যার দ্বিরাষ্ট্রভিত্তিক সমাধান এখনই বাস্তবায়ন করতে হবে। শুধু ১৯৬৭ সালের পূর্বের সীমারেখার ভিত্তিতে, যেখানে ইসরাইল ও ফিলিস্তিনে শান্তিপূর্ণ সহাবস্থান থাকবে, তখনই ন্যায়বিচার সম্পূর্ণভাবে কার্যকর হবে।”
Translation: “The two-state solution must be implemented now by establishing an independent Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital. Only based on the pre-1967 borders, where Israel and Palestine coexist peacefully, will justice be fully realized.”
