A student from the University of Dhaka (DU) was killed after being stabbed by a group of miscreants. The tragic incident occurred late on Monday night, May 13, in front of the Ramna Kali Temple, which is close to the university campus.
Identity of the Victim
The victim has been identified as Shahriar Alam Samyo, aged 25. He was a student of the 2018-19 session under the Institute of Education and Research (IER) at Dhaka University. This information was confirmed by Md. Khalid Mansur, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station.
Samyo was a resident student of room number 222 at AF Rahman Hall of the university. He was originally from Ullapara upazila in Sirajganj district. Alongside his academic activities, Samyo was also involved in student politics. He served as the Literature and Publication Secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of the student organization Chhatra Dal.

How the Incident Happened
According to the police, the incident took place around midnight. Samyo was riding his motorcycle and was passing through the area near Ramna Kali Temple, located inside Suhrawardy Udyan.His motorbike unintentionally collided with another motorcycles during this period.
The little collision resulted in a confrontation between Samyo and the rider or riders of the second motorbike. As the conversation heated up, a violent battle broke out. Samyo was once stabbed in the right thigh by one of the attackers. After the attack, the assailants quickly fled the scene.
Immediate Medical Response
Some of Samyo’s fellow students rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as he was seriously injured and bleeding heavily. Unfortunately, the on-duty doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival.
Md. Faruk, the in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed Samyo’s death based on information from hospital sources. He said, “There was a deep injury from a sharp weapon on his right leg. His body has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy.”
Police are currently investigating the incident and trying to identify and arrest the attackers involved in the fatal stabbing.
