E-sports, the competitive form of video gaming, has now been officially recognized in Bangladesh. While many countries around the world have already accepted e-sports as a professional sport, Bangladesh took a significant step today by forming a special committee to create national guidelines for the sector.
Ministry Forms Committee for E-Sports Policy
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has formed a committee to draft the first-ever e-sports policy for the country. The committee will be led by Additional Secretary of the Sports Ministry, Dr. Saiful Alam. Other members include the Director of Sports at the National Sports Council (serving as Member Secretary), a professor from the Department of IIT at Dhaka University, and a representative from the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division.

Following Global Standards and Expert Opinions
The committee will follow the International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines while preparing the policy. It will also gather expert and stakeholder feedback to ensure the policy is relevant and practical. The responsibilities of the committee include:
-
Drafting the national e-sports policy
-
Recommending proposals to the government for developing e-sports in Bangladesh
-
Acting as a watchdog for the e-sports sector
-
Reviewing related laws, regulations, and ICT ministry opinions
The committee has been instructed to submit its final report within 21 working days.
E-Sports Growing Globally
E-sports is already gaining popularity worldwide and has even made its way into international competitions. The sport was featured in the last Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, where seven e-sports events took place. Discussions are ongoing to include e-sports in future Olympic Games as well.
A New Era for Digital Sports in Bangladesh
This move marks a new chapter for young gamers and digital athletes in Bangladesh. The official recognition of e-sports may open up new opportunities for competition, sponsorship, and career growth in the gaming industry.
