E-Sports on the Way to Gaining Official Sport Status in Bangladesh

E-Sports

The Ministry of Youth and Sports in Bangladesh is preparing to officially recognize electronic sports (e-sports) as a part of mainstream sports. This decision follows the growing popularity of e-sports among the country’s youth. According to reports, policy discussions have already taken place within the ministry, and a draft guideline has also been prepared.

A Global Industry with Huge Growth

Around the world, e-sports has become a huge industry with international tournaments, millions of dollars in sponsorship, and the participation of millions of young players. It is no longer just an alternative to traditional sports—it’s a full-fledged competitive and professional field.

After the International Olympic Committee announced that e-sports could be considered as a possible Olympic event, many countries started investing in this sector. Now, Bangladesh is following the same path.

“A Timely Step”—Says a Ministry Official

An official from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, speaking anonymously, said:
“We are working to bring e-sports into mainstream sports. Considering youth interest and its economic potential, this step is very timely.”

E-Sports Is Already Growing in Bangladesh

Even before official recognition, some private organizations and companies in Bangladesh have been organizing e-sports tournaments. There is already a growing and active community of gamers, many of whom are now competing internationally.

A representative from the proposed Bangladesh E-Sports Federation said:
“If we get government recognition, we’ll be able to represent Bangladesh in international tournaments with our national flag. This will also bring financial and social security to professional gamers.”

What Benefits Will Gamers Get?

Once e-sports is officially recognized as a sport, gamers in Bangladesh will be able to receive several benefits, such as:

  • Sports allowances

  • Training and coaching opportunities

  • Awards and financial support from the government

It will also make it easier for schools and colleges to organize gaming clubs and competitions.

Public Doubts Still Exist

Although e-sports is growing fast, some people in society still see it as just a form of entertainment. However, experts argue that e-sports involves research, quick reflexes, strategy, teamwork, and the ability to handle mental pressure, making it a complete competitive sport.

Draft Policy Already Prepared

A draft policy has already been created. It will set rules for:

  • How e-sports organizations will be formed

  • Who can qualify as a professional player

  • What types of tournaments will be recognized

  • How the government will allocate budgets for e-sports

A New Era for E-Sports in Bangladesh

If the official recognition is finalized, it will open the door for Bangladesh to host and join international e-sports events. Many believe this will mark the beginning of a new era for digital sports in the country.
