BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has warned that delaying the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election would bring catastrophe to the nation. He alleged that certain quarters are conspiring to postpone the polls and sabotage the democratic process, which he believes would have dire consequences for Bangladesh.
He added,
“আজকে যে চক্রান্ত, ষড়যন্ত্র চলছে নির্বাচনকে বানচাল করে দেওয়ার, নির্বাচনকে পিছিয়ে দেওয়ার; সেই নির্বাচনকে পিছিয়ে দেওয়া মানে আমাদের সর্বনাশ হওয়া। এ দেশের সর্বনাশ হওয়া। কারণ এখন একটা নির্বাচিত সরকার খুব দরকার।
Translation:“Today, a conspiracy is underway to derail or delay the election,” said Fakhrul. “If the election is postponed, it will mean our destruction the destruction of the nation. Right now, the country urgently needs an elected government.”
He expressed his hope that Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, the current head of the interim government, would quickly announce the election schedule and pave the way for the formation of a democratically elected government. Fakhrul said
“এই সরকারটা এখন তাড়াতাড়ি নির্বাচনটা করবে। প্রফেসর ইউনূসকে আমরা সম্মান করি, শ্রদ্ধা করি। তিনি অতি দ্রুত আর কোন কালবিলম্ব না করে নির্বাচনের তফসিল ঘোষণার ব্যবস্থা করবে। দেশের একটা নির্বাচিত সরকার প্রতিষ্ঠা করবেন।”
Translation:“ We respect and honor Professor Yunus. He should not delay any further. He must take the initiative to declare the election timetable and establish an elected government as soon as possible.”
He made these remarks on Monday at 11:30 a.m. during a meeting with freedom fighters and their descendants, organized by the Thakurgaon District Freedom Fighters Command Council.
The BNP leader strongly emphasized that there can be no compromise with those who opposed Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. Fakhrul declared that,
“আজকে সুপরিকল্পিতভাবে একটি চক্র, একটি মহল যারা ১৯৭১ সালে পাকিস্তান হানাদার বাহিনীর সঙ্গে যোগসাজশ করে এদেশের মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের হত্যা করেছিল, তাদের পরিবারকে হত্যা করেছিল; তাদের মেয়েদের তুলে দিয়েছিল খান বাহিনীর হাতে, তাদের সঙ্গে কি এদেশের মানুষ আপোষ করতে পারে? পারে না। এজন্য মুক্তিযোদ্ধাদের গর্জে উঠতে হবে তো।
Translation:“A certain group, which collaborated with the Pakistani occupation forces during the Liberation War, killed our freedom fighters, destroyed their families, and handed over their daughters to the enemy. Can we ever reconcile with such people? Absolutely not.”

He urged freedom fighters to raise their voices once again to protect the nation’s core values. He said-
“আমাদের ধর্মপ্রাণ মুসল্লি ভাইদের ধর্মীয় অনুভূতিকে বিক্রি করে তারা ওই কাজগুলো করতে চাচ্ছে; আমরা সেটা করতে দিতে পারি না। আজকে আমাদের রুখে দাঁড়াতে হবে। আমাদের মুক্তিযুদ্ধের যে চেতনা সেই চেতনাকে সামনে আনতে হবে। আমরা এদেশের মানুষ লড়াই করেছি, সংগ্রাম করেছি, মুক্তিযুদ্ধ করে ৭১ সালে দেশকে স্বাধীন করেছি।”
Translation:“They are now trying to manipulate our devout Muslims by exploiting religious sentiments. We cannot let that happen. We must stand firm and revive the true spirit of our Liberation War. We fought, struggled, and achieved independence in 1971 we cannot let anyone distort that legacy.”
Fakhrul also warned against efforts to erase the memory of the Liberation War from the national consciousness. He continued,
“মুক্তিযুদ্ধকে ভুলিয়ে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করা হচ্ছে। ৭১টা হয় নাই, আমরা কিছুই করি নাই; দেশটার জন্য আমরা কোন অবদানই রাখি নাই। এখন ২৪টা যারা করছে, তারাই সব করছে। এমনটাই বোঝানো হচ্ছে।”
Translation: “There’s a deliberate attempt to erase our history, to make it seem as if 1971 never happened as if we made no contribution to this country. They want to make it appear that only the events of 2024 matter. This distortion must not be tolerated”

Recalling the sacrifices of the nine-month-long war, he said,
“নয়টা মাস আমরা দীর্ঘকাল যুদ্ধ করেছি, পরিবার-পরিজনের খবর নেওয়া হয়নি, কত মানুষ কোথায় চলে গেছে। সেই ৭১-কে ভুলিয়ে দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করলে কি সেটা ভোলা যাবে? আমি কি আমার জন্মটাকে ভুলতে পারি, এটা মাথার মধ্যে রাখতে হবে।”
Translate:“We fought for nine long months, often losing touch with our families, witnessing countless deaths and disappearances. How can we ever forget that struggle? Can I forget my own birth? Never. We must keep that memory alive in our hearts.”
The event was also attended by Central Freedom Fighters Command Convenor Naeem Jahangir, Thakurgaon District Command Convenor Bir Muktijoddha Nur Karim, District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, and Municipal BNP President Shariful Islam Sharif, among others.
