Messi’s Special Announcement

After a thrilling performance with Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup, where he scored two goals to help his team come from behind, Lionel Messi shared major news about his national team career.

The Argentine star announced that the upcoming game against Venezuela on September 4 will be his last home match with Argentina.

He said:

“Yes, it’s going to be special, it’s going to be a very special match for me because it’s the last one of the qualifiers. I don’t know if there will be a friendly or more matches afterwards, but it is a very special match and that’s why my family is going to accompany me: my wife, my children, my parents, my brothers and sisters, and all those who can on my wife’s side, the whole family. We are going to live it that way. Afterwards I don’t know what will happen, but we are going with that intention.”

Not the End of World Cup Qualifiers

It’s important to note that this home match against Venezuela is not Messi’s final World Cup qualifier. Argentina will still play against Ecuador to close their South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

This means Messi’s final 90 minutes in the qualifiers will be against Ecuador under coach Sebastian Beccacece.

Friendly Matches and Finalism Still Ahead

Messi’s time with Argentina is far from over. He will still participate in:

  • Friendly matches in November 2025

  • Finalism against Spain in March 2026

Reflecting on the Clasico del Sol

Messi also spoke about his recent performance in the Clasico del Sol for Inter Miami, describing it as a special moment:

“It was special, it is always special to play a classic. Orlando is a great rival, who has very good players, with a well-worked team, with a coach who has been working for many years in the same way, with the same group. It was a small revenge for us for having lost these two league games, but I was lucky to play the other time in the Leagues Cup against Orlando and win. It’s special.”

He emphasized how meaningful it was to play with his team and win against strong opponents in such high stakes matches.
