Criticism of Corruption
At a political gathering in Tetulia upazila of Panchagarh on Tuesday evening (November 4), Sarjis Alam, the northern organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP), made strong comments against former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury.
“শেখ হাসিনার ভূমিমন্ত্রীর ৩৬০টা বাড়ি কানাডায়। একটা মানুষের শরীরের হাড় হইল ২০৬টা। মরার পর হাড়গুলো আলাদা করে যদি একটা বাড়িতে একটা কবর হিসাবে রাখে, তাও ১০০টা বাড়ি পড়ে থাকবে। এ রকম করেই জনগণের টাকার লুটপাট করেছে।”
Translation: “Sheikh Hasina’s land minister owns 360 houses in Canada. A human body has 206 bones. Even if each bone were buried in one house after death, 100 houses would still remain empty. This is how they looted people’s money.”
He used this metaphor to describe what he called massive corruption by government figures during Sheikh Hasina’s rule.
“নিজেই তৈরি করুন নিজের অনলাইন স্টোর — কোনো কোডিং জ্ঞান ছাড়াই!”
Call for Change Through Referendum
During the same event, Sargis spoke about the July Charter (জুলাই সনদ), emphasizing that it was created to bring fairness and balance between the government and the people.
“প্রায় ৩০-৪০ বছর আগে একবার গণভোট হয়েছিল। আবার সামনে গণভোট হবে… এই জুলাই সনদ হলো সেই সনদ, যেখানে লেখা আছে— কোন পরিবর্তনগুলো হলে জনগণের সঙ্গে সরকারের ক্ষমতার একটি ভারসাম্য তৈরি হবে।”
Translation: “About 30–40 years ago there was a referendum, and another one is coming. The July Charter explains what changes are needed to create a balance of power between the government and the people.”
Sarjis Alam said the aim of this reform is to ensure no future government can become authoritarian and that leadership remains accountable to citizens.

Nation Before Party
Addressing the party workers, Sargis reminded them that the country must come before political interests.
“আমরা যে দলেরই হই না কেন, এই বাংলাদেশের জনগণের আগে, দেশের আগে কিংবা নিজের জীবনের নাগরিক সুবিধার আগে, কিংবা এগুলোর ঊর্ধ্বে কখনো দল হতে পারে না। দেশের চেয়ে কখনো দল বড় হতে পারে না।”
Translation: “No matter which party we belong to, nothing can be greater than the people or the country. A political party can never be bigger than the nation.”
He urged everyone to vote ‘Yes’ in the upcoming referendum in support of the July Charter.
