Body Found 12 Days After Tragic Fire
Twelve days after the devastating fire at a chemical warehouse in Mirpur’s Rupnagar area, police recovered the burnt remains of a young woman, later identified as Marzia Sultana (18). The recovery took place on Sunday afternoon (October 26) from the third floor of a garment factory building.

The police, with the help of Marzia’s family, conducted the search and later sent the body to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Police Confirm the Recovery
Rupnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Morshed Alam confirmed the recovery and stated that this brings the total death toll in the incident to 17. Police said,
“রোববার বিকেলে অগ্নিকাণ্ডের ঘটনাস্থলের পোশাক কারখানার ভেতর থেকে একজনের মরদেহ উদ্ধার করা হয়। এনিয়ে ঘটনাটিতে নিহতের সংখ্যা বেড়ে দাঁড়াল ১৭।”
Translation: “On Sunday afternoon, a body was recovered from inside the garment factory at the fire site. With this, the total number of deaths in the incident has risen to 17.”

Family’s Painful Search Ends
Marzia’s father, Sultan Mia, said they had been searching for their daughter since the incident of Fire in Mirpur. The family hails from Golla Rajapur village in Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj. Marzia worked at the same factory as her husband, Joy Mia, who was found dead shortly after the incident.
“আমাদের বিশ্বাস ছিল, মর্জিয়ার লাশ ওই ভবনেই রয়েছে। এজন্য বারবার ভবনটিতে খোঁজার চেষ্টা করছিলাম। কিন্তু কেউ সুযোগ দিচ্ছিল না। এজন্য রোববার বিকেলে আমরা থানায় গিয়ে পুলিশ নিয়ে ওই ভবনে খুঁজতে যাই। এক পর্যায়ে ৩য় তলায় মেশিনের নিচে চাপা পড়া একটি মরদেহ খুঁজে পাই। এটিই আমার মেয়ের লাশ। তার পরনের বোরকা দেখে চিনতে পেরেছি।”
Translation: “We believed Marzia’s body was inside that building. We tried several times to search, but no one allowed us. On Sunday afternoon, we went to the police and entered with their help. On the third floor, under a machine, we found a body. It was my daughter. I recognized her by the burqa she was wearing.”

Unidentified at First
Initially, police could not determine whether the recovered body was male or female due to severe burns. However, after the father’s identification, it was confirmed to be Marzia Sultana, who had been missing since the fire.
