Lioness Escapes Cage at Mirpur National Zoo

On Friday, the weekly holiday, the Mirpur National Zoo in Dhaka was crowded with visitors. Around 4:45 pm, a lioness suddenly broke open its cage and came outside. The zoo authorities immediately evacuated visitors to avoid any danger. Although there was panic, no injuries were reported.

Tranquilized After Two Hours

After trying to control the situation safely, zoo officials used a tranquilizer gun at around 6:30 pm to make the lioness unconscious. Later, at 7:15 pm, the animal was successfully placed back into its cage.

Imtiaz Mahmud’s Viral Satire

Referring to this incident, poet Imtiaz Mahmud made a satirical Facebook post on Friday (5 December). His post quickly went viral on social media. Imtiaz Mahmud Wrote,

‘মিরপুর চিড়িয়াখানার খাঁচা ভেঙে পালানো বেকুব সিংহটার জন্য খারাপ লাগছে। সে (সিংহী) এখনো টের পায় নাই যে, পুরো দেশটাই একটা চিড়িয়াখানা।’

Translation: “I feel bad for the foolish lion that escaped from the Mirpur Zoo cage. She (the lioness) still doesn’t realize that the entire country is a zoo.”

People reacted widely to the post, praising his humour and ability to comment on current issues through satire.

A Poet Known for Wit and Depth

Imtiaz Mahmud is widely recognized for his sharp satire, humour, and unique perspective on contemporary issues. He is popular not only in Bangladesh but also in West Bengal, India.

Born in 1980 in Jhalokathi, Imtiaz completed his master’s degree in international relations at Dhaka University. His poetry book ‘Pentacle’ won the prestigious Krittibas Award in West Bengal. He is admired by young readers for his depth of thought, unique language style, and creative metaphors.
