The Incident in Tongi

A massive Fire at Chemical Warehouse in Tongi’s BSCIC industrial area, Sahara Market, on Monday afternoon (22 September) around 3:30 pm. The warehouse was a semi-pucca tin shed used for storing chemicals for garment factories.

According to locals, an explosion suddenly took place inside the warehouse, and within moments the fire spread rapidly in the area.

Injured and Their Condition

Five people were burned in the incident, including four members of the fire service and one local shopkeeper. Among them, two are in very critical condition.

The injured are:

  • Firefighter Md. Shamim Ahmed (42)
  • Firefighter Md. Nurul Huda (40)
  • Firefighter Md. Joy Hasan (28)
  • Fire Service Officer Jannatul Naeem (35)
  • Local hardware shopkeeper Al-Amin Babu (22)

They were quickly rescued and taken to Dhaka’s National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.

Fire Service Response

After the fire started, three units of the fire service first rushed to the spot, and later four more units joined. A total of seven units worked together to bring the situation under control.

Abdul Mannan, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service (Dhaka Zone–3), confirmed the matter. He said:

“After receiving the news of the fire, three units first started working, and later four more units joined. Now the fire is almost under control. But how the fire started, and the actual damage can only be known after investigation.”

Current Situation

As of the latest update, the fire is under control but not fully extinguished. Firefighters are still working at the scene to prevent further explosions from the chemical drums.

The exact cause of the fire and the amount of damage are yet to be determined.
