Qatar PM on Gaza Governance

Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has said that the responsibility of running Gaza belongs only to the Palestinian people. He emphasized three main points – stopping the war, ending displacement, and a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

He told Al Jazeera:

“Everyone agrees that the war must stop, displacement must end, and Israeli forces must fully withdraw from Gaza. The responsibility of governing Gaza lies with the Palestinian people. Ensuring security for Gazans is our top priority.”

Trump’s 20-Point Ceasefire Plan

The Qatari PM said that the ceasefire plan proposed by US President Donald Trump supports the mediators’ main goal – to stop killings and displacement of Palestinians.

Doha has already handed the plan to Hamas negotiators for discussion. Sheikh Mohammed admitted that there are “practical and procedural challenges” but stressed that ending bloodshed is urgent.

The plan has received support from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Turkey, and Indonesia. If accepted, Israeli attacks would stop immediately, and humanitarian aid would be allowed into Gaza.

Prisoner Swaps and Hamas Role

The proposal states that within 72 hours of acceptance, Hamas would release all Israeli captives, while Israel would free about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Hamas would also step down from power, disarm, and its members would receive amnesty. A Palestinian technocrat committee would temporarily run Gaza, supported by international supervision and local police training.

However, the plan does not set a clear timeline for Israeli troop withdrawal. Instead, Israel may maintain a “security zone” until it considers the area safe.

Apology from Netanyahu

During a meeting with Trump at the White House, Israeli PM Netanyahu reportedly apologized to Sheikh Mohammed for a strike in Doha last month that killed a Qatari citizen during an Israeli attack on Hamas leaders.

Criticism of the Plan

Some analysts criticized the deal as an ultimatum rather than a genuine proposal.

Palestinian lawyer Diana Buttu said:

“When you read the deal, there is not a single guarantee for Palestinians. All guarantees are for Israelis.”

Phyllis Bennis of the Institute for Policy Studies added:

“It suggests Israel can restart the war at any time.”

Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Since October 7, 2023, Israel’s attacks have killed 66,097 Palestinians and injured 168,536. Gaza’s Health Ministry says 453 people have died from malnutrition due to blocked aid.
