A Doctor’s Courage Amid War

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the paediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned this nomination for his extraordinary courage and dedication in treating patients during the devastating war in Gaza.

Despite the danger, Dr. Abu Safiya refused to abandon his patients, continuing his medical duties until his arrest by Israeli forces.

Detained Under Harsh Conditions

Currently, Dr. Abu Safiya is detained by Israeli authorities, and his health has deteriorated badly. His lawyer, Gheed Kassem, reported that Abu Safiya has lost over 30 kilograms, suffers from high blood pressure, and faces complications from shrapnel injuries sustained during the conflict.

Kassem said his condition worsened following violent interrogations at Sde Teiman prison and due to the inhumane conditions at Ofer prison, where he contracted scabies, endured solitary confinement, and was kept constantly restrained.

Injustice Without Trial

Dr. Abu Safiya has been held without trial, despite his recognized humanitarian service. He is believed to be suffering in harsh detention conditions, raising concerns among international human rights groups and medical organizations.

One supporter expressed his frustration on social media:

“A man who devoted his life to saving children is now fighting for his own life behind bars.”
