A leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been accused of demanding a ransom of Tk 50,000 from a businessman in Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram district on the promise of protecting him from a lawsuit. An audio recording released in the incident has sparked heated discussions in the local political and social arena.
The accused is Anisur Rahman, who is serving as the president of the Rajibpur upazila branch of the Workers’ Welfare Federation, an affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The victim, businessman Babu Mia, alleged that Anisur Rahman threatened him and demanded Tk 50,000 by citing a case of an attack on the Jamaat office in Rajibpur in 2013. According to Babu Mia, Anisur Rahman threatened him by introducing himself as a close associate of the police station officer (OC) and promised to absolve him of responsibility in the case.

In the audio clip, Anisur Rahman can be heard saying,
‘বাবু শোনো, তোমার বিষয়ে আমাকে ফোন দিয়েছিল অফিসার। আমি বলছি, ও আমার ছোট ভাই, বিষয়টা আমি দেখব। তুমি আমার সাথে জরুরি দেখা করো… তোমার যদি একটা পশমের ক্ষতি হয়, আমি রাজিবপুরে দ্বিতীয় দিন মুখ দেখাব না।’
Translation: “Listen, Babu, the officer called me about you. I’m telling you, he’s my younger brother, I’ll look into the matter. You meet me urgently… If you lose a single hair, I won’t show my face in Rajibpur for the second day.”
Then again said,
‘তুমি আমার মোটরসাইকেলে ঘুরবা। পৃথিবীর কোনো শক্তি নেই ইনশাআল্লাহ। তুমি ফ্রি থাকো। আলহামদুলিল্লাহ বলে দুই গ্লাস পানি খাও। তোমার ভাই আছে তোমার পাশে।’
Translation: “You ride my motorcycle. There is no power in the world, God willing. You are free. Drink two glasses of water, thank God. Your brother is by your side.”
Businessman Babu Mia said,
‘আমি কোনো রাজনৈতিক দলের সঙ্গে জড়িত না। দীর্ঘদিন ধরে রাজিবপুর বাজারে পার্টসের ব্যবসা করি। এখন আমি নিরাপত্তাহীনতায় ভুগছি।’
Translation: “I am not associated with any political party. I have been doing parts business in Rajibpur market for a long time. Now I am suffering from insecurity.”
Regarding the allegations, Anisur Rahman said,
‘আমি তার কাছে কোনো টাকা চাইনি। এটি একটি পরিকল্পিত ষড়যন্ত্র। অডিওটি এডিট করা।’
Translation: “I did not ask him for any money. This is a planned conspiracy. The audio was edited.”
Regarding the 2013 incident, he said,
‘তখন সে মামলার আসামি হতে পারে না, কারণ ওই সময় তার বয়সই হয়নি। মামলা হয়েছে অনেক পরে।’
Translation: “He cannot be an accused in the case then, because he was not of age at that time. The case was filed much later.”
Kurigram District Jamaat Ameer Abdul Matin Farooqui said,
‘আমরা বিষয়টি নিয়ে অবগত আছে। এ ঘটনায় তদন্ত কমিটি গঠন করা হয়েছে। তদন্ত প্রতিবেদন হাতে পেলে পরে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।’
Translation: “We are aware of the matter. An investigation committee has been formed in this incident. Action will be taken later once the investigation report is received.”
Meanwhile, Rajibpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam said,
‘আমি থানায় নতুন যোগদান করেছি। আমার সময়ে এমন কোনো অভিযোগ পাওয়া যায়নি। যদি এমন কিছু পাওয়া যায়, অবশ্যই আইন অনুযায়ী ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।’
Translation: “I have just joined the police station. No such complaint has been received during my time. If anything like this is found, action will definitely be taken according to the law.”
The incident has sparked widespread discussion and reaction at the local level. Businessman Babu Mia, who claims to be suffering from insecurity, has demanded immediate legal assistance and justice. The matter is already being taken seriously in administrative and political circles.
