Google Removes Key Cultural Events from Calendar: Is Diversity at Risk?

Google performed a major system update to its Calendar settings which removed Black History Month alongside Pride Month and Women’s History Month as well as Holocaust Remembrance Day National Hispanic Heritage Month and Indigenous Peoples Month. After the update in mid-2024, users no longer received these events automatically.

A Google representative explained that their team could no longer manage the maintenance of hundreds of global observances, so now the platform only shows public holidays from timeanddate.com. Users can still create cultural events manually if they wish.

Google is facing increasing criticism for this decision, as it is seen as part of a wider trend of reducing efforts to promote diversity. The decision to remove certain cultural observances has sparked discussions about whether the company is still committed to recognizing important historical events, although Google has not released a full list of events that were removed. Some people think this change makes sense, while others believe it shows a decrease in support for creating an inclusive workplace.
