A New AI App Called Google AI Edge Gallery
Google has quietly launched a new app called Google AI Edge Gallery. This app lets people run different types of AI models from the popular platform Hugging Face directly on their smartphones. These models can do things like:
- Create images
- Answer questions
- Write or edit code
- Summarize and rewrite text
The best part? These models can work offline, meaning they don’t need the internet to run. Instead, the app uses the processor inside your phone to complete the tasks.
Available on Android, Coming Soon to iOS
Right now, the app is available for Android devices, but Google says an iOS version is on the way. You can download the app from GitHub, and Google is calling it an “experimental Alpha release.” That means it’s still being tested and improved.

How It Works
When you open the app, you’ll see shortcuts to different types of AI tasks like:
- “Ask Image” – to ask questions about pictures
- “AI Chat” – to chat with an AI
- “Prompt Lab” – to perform one-time tasks such as summarizing a paragraph
When you select a task, the app shows a list of AI models you can use. One example is Google’s Gemma 3n model. You can choose a model and get started right away.
Performance Depends on Your Device
Google mentions that not all phones will perform the same. If you have a newer or more powerful phone, it will run models faster and more smoothly. On the other hand, if the model is large or your phone is older, it may take longer to complete tasks.
Prompt Lab for Custom Tasks
The app includes a feature called Prompt Lab, which lets users do “single turn” AI tasks. This means you give the model one instruction, and it gives you one response. You can:
- Choose from built-in templates
- Change settings to make the AI behave the way you want
Why Run AI Models Locally?
Usually, AI models work from the cloud, meaning your data goes to a remote server. But many users don’t like this, especially if the data is personal or sensitive. Running models directly on your device means your data stays private and you don’t need Wi-Fi or mobile data.
Open to Developers
Google is inviting developers and AI enthusiasts to try the app and give feedback. The app is released under the Apache 2.0 license, which means it can be used freely, even in commercial projects.
