July 16, 2025, on the morning of Wednesday in the Ulpur area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila, a group allegedly affiliated with the now-banned Chhatra League vandalized and set fire to a police patrol vehicle.
The attack occurred ahead of a scheduled rally by the National Citizen Party (NCP) as part of their month-long “Build the Nation with the July March” campaign.
According to Gopalganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Mir Md Sajedur Rahman, the attackers were reportedly supporters of Ataur Rahman Piyal, the district general secretary of Chhatra League.
Their alleged objective was to disrupt the NCP’s event at Poura Park in Gopalganj town, where central party leaders were expected.
Two police constables, Md Kawsar Hossain and Minhaz Sarker, were injured during the clash and are being treated at Gopalganj General Hospital. Constable Kawsar recounted that around 50 individuals attacked officers using sticks and bricks when they attempted to question a man from a crowd that had gathered under the pretext of a local tournament.
Law enforcement units, including the army, Armed Police Battalion (APBn), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Fire Service, have been deployed in the Ulpur Bazar area to maintain order.

Fire service personnel stated that the blaze had already been extinguished before their arrival and that they were present for inspection.
The atmosphere in Gopalganj remains tense following the attack, with heightened security ahead of the NCP rally. The party’s organizers, including northern region coordinator Sarjis Alam and central leaders such as Nahid Islam and Dr Tasnim Jara, had publicly promoted the rally via social media. In a rallying Facebook post, Alam declared:
“Comrades of the revolution, come rushing like a comet. We shall meet in Gopalganj town today, Wednesday, at 11am, In Sha Allah.”
He also emphasized the party’s vision for equality and justice in Gopalganj, rejecting political dynasties and vowing to fight for the rights of ordinary citizens.
The NCP’s July March program has held events across various districts since July 1, drawing both attention and confrontation in politically sensitive areas.
